Big Win for West Shore in Pa
West Shore came out on top of a very close, intense match 25-20. While it was West Shore United's first match of the season, Downingtown was coming off an impressive 12-3 victory over RugbyMag #16 Union County, NJ last week at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
West Shore prepared for their season opener with tough scrimmages against two High School teams ranked in RugbyMag.com's top 20, #3 Gonzaga (Washington DC) and #17 Salesianum (DE).
West Shore was led by junior Fullback Aaron Skonecki, who recorded two tries and a penalty goal. Skonecki also was strong on defense, making some clutch tackles when Downingtown was able to break through West Shore's defensive line.
Downingtown had an excellent chance to win or tie on the final play of the match. They crashed through the West Shore midfield after a lineout and looked close to scoring. But Skonecki was able to get enough of a hit on the Downingtown center to cause a knock-on in-goal. Referee Len Borky called the knock and blew the final whistle and West Shore narrowly escaped with the 25-20 victory.
West Shore moved to 1-0, just behind 2-0 Carlisle, who recorded their second win of the season, this week of Upper Dauphin. High School teams Salesianum and Saint Augustine are also both 2-0 after winning.
