The Downingtown Rugby Football Club is a competitive club in Southeastern Pennsylvania dedicated to bringing the great sport of rugby to students in the Downingtown Area School District.
Founded in 1996 by Mike Drill, a teacher at Dowingtown Middle School and former rugby player at Millersville University, the Club started small, fielding a single side of U19 Boys. Since then, the Club has experienced consistent growth, reaching hundreds of students.
Today, D.R.F.C. teams include:
- a U19 Division 1 Boys squad with A and B sides
- a U19 Division 1 Girls squad with A and B sides
- a U15 Boys team
- a U13 Boys team
- multiple Summer Sevens sides
- U12 and U10 Co-Ed Flag rugby (starting June of this summer)
In addition to competing against other rugby clubs in southeastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and surrounding states, the D.R.F.C. provides opportunities for players to participate in international touring sides.
International travel is not only fun, its an important learning experience. This is especially true for rugby players in the United States. In other countries, like the United Kingdom, Ireland, even Tonga, youths are exposed to the game of rugby at a young age. They grow up playing the sport.
In order to grow the talent pool in the US, the D.R.F.C. believes that exposure to international competition is important. Therefore, each year we organize trips abroad to give club members this opportunity.
Please see the Tours link in the Boys and Girls sections, as well as the Photo Galleries, for more tour information and photos.
We welcome players of all abilities and have members from Downingtown High School East, Downingtown High School West, Downingtown S.T.E.M. Academy, Downingtown Middle School, Lionville Middle School, and a number of DASD elementary schools.
